Based on my persuasive essay on fairness and equality in allowing the top gymnasts to compete for medals in Olympic Gymnastics, I plan on making an advocacy video entitled, “The Quest for the Best.” This slogan is meant to imply that the best athletes should be the ones competing for the Olympic medals and that strict limitations on competitors based on nationality should be abolished. I plan on making a YouTube video that incorporates several forms of visual rhetoric.
I plan on using footage of amazing gymnasts that will immediately capture the attention of the viewers. I also plan to show the devastating pictures and videos of Jordan Wieber crying as she watched her dream die due to the new rule preventing three gymnasts from the same country from competing in the finals. I plan on using pictures and possibly interviews. I think that background music will effectively portray both the triumph and tragedy of various aspects of the topic.
I hope to ask a few people how they felt watching these athletes be denied their chance at individual Olympic medals. I might interview some athletes with Olympic dreams of their own. I will also review written and televised interviews with some of those affected by the new rules including gymnasts and coaches.
I think video is a good mode choice because the gymnastics will capture the attention of the viewers while the interviews, images, and photos will support my claim with ethos. Since the issue applies internationally, visual imagery will cross language and cultural barriers the same way that Olympic competition does. I think that this video will help me to advocate for the removal of the limitations on these athletes and I think it will be a good and effective form of rhetoric.
